A brand-new Dungeons & Dragons game is officially in development and it’s coming from a name that action-adventure fans will recognize. Stig Asmussen, the creative mind behind God of War 3 and the Star Wars Jedi series, is leading the project through his new studio Giant Skull, which was founded in late 2023.
The upcoming title is described as a single-player action-adventure game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, developed in Unreal Engine 5 and confirmed for both console and PC. Though specific platforms and a release window have yet to be announced, the project marks another high-profile push from Wizards of the Coast to expand the D&D franchise in video games following the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3.
A New Direction for D&D Games
Unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, which leaned heavily into RPG mechanics and turn-based combat, this new game is aiming for a different gameplay experience. Labeled as an action-adventure rather than an RPG, it may bring faster-paced, third-person exploration and combat more in line with Asmussen’s previous work on Jedi: Fallen Order and God of War.
So far, there's no official title or setting. While it hasn’t been confirmed whether the game takes place in the Forgotten Realms or connects directly to Baldur’s Gate, there’s speculation that familiar characters like Wyll, Karlach, or Shadowheart who are technically owned by Wizards of the Coast, not Larian Studios could make cameo appearances or receive in-game references.
What Is Giant Skull?
Giant Skull is a new game studio founded by Stig Asmussen in September 2023. With decades of experience working at studios like Santa Monica Studio and Respawn Entertainment, Asmussen brings a reputation for creating critically acclaimed, narrative-driven action titles. This Dungeons & Dragons project will be the studio’s first official game.
While there’s still much to learn, the announcement underscores Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast’s growing commitment to premium D&D games. With Larian Studios moving on to new IPs, Giant Skull’s entry into the D&D space could provide a fresh take on the franchise for players eager to explore its rich fantasy worlds through a new lens.
When Will It Be Released?
There is currently no release date or gameplay trailer, but the confirmation that the game is in development is exciting news for both Dungeons & Dragons fans and players who love narrative-driven action experiences. If the past work of Asmussen is any indication, this could be one of the most ambitious and cinematic D&D games ever made.
